Smart Bottoms Too Smart Cover & Smartfold Prefold Review

Smart Bottoms Too Smart Cover & Smartfold Organic Prefolds Review

Before I get into my review, I feel I would be remiss if I did not mention that Smart Bottoms knocked it out of the proverbial cloth-diaper-print park in 2016.  I mean, have you seen Sprinkles, aka the DOUGHNUT diaper?! Makes me hungry every time we use it, and it was the first time in a long time that I decided I needed to buy a new diaper just to have the print. For our Too Smart cover and SmartFold organic prefold review, I chose “Enchanted.”

The Too Smart cover is a one-size, double-gusset cover with four rise settings and a double row of waist snaps. The inside is wipeable, making it an ideal all-in-two cover: just change the wet insert and reuse the cover. Front and back inner flaps hold a prefold or insert in place.

The double gussets on the Too Smart make for a nice seal around the legs to help prevent leg leaks.

I’ve tested a lot of different one-size covers over the years, and they are certainly not all created equal. One particular advantage of the Too Smart is that it actually covers a huge overnight fitted diaper without gaps. Not all covers with a similar weight range (10–35 lbs) can be used on top of a bulky fitted.

Smart Bottoms’ Smartfold prefolds come in small, medium and large. The distinction between an insert or a trifold and a prefold is the 2 x 3 x 2 construction: there’s an extra layer of fabric in the centre of a prefold.

The Smartfold is 45% organic cotton and 55% hemp—my most favourite diaper composition! For Little Miss I chose the large Smartfold, which is listed as suitable for babies 24 lbs and up. Fully prepped, it should measure 14.5″ x 16″, but I’ve measured mine and it is now 13.5″ x 14.5″ after many washings. (I find prefolds keep shrinking for quite some time!)

My favourite time to use our Smartfold prefold is for our first diaper of the morning. I often find Little Miss will leak through her first diaper of the day, but not her Smartfold! You can use any brand of insert or prefold with a Too Smart cover, of course. The inner flaps are an advantage, holding any insert in place, no snaps required.Smart Bottoms Too Smart Cover & Smartfold Organic Prefolds Review

To get maximum absorbency in the centre of the diaper, ideal for girls, I fold the Smartfold to get nine layers in the centre. If you’re using a smaller Smartfold—or using the cover on its largest rise—you won’t need to fold down the prefold to shorten it to fit in the cover.

My favourite things about the Too Smart cover and Smartfold prefolds:

  • 100% made in the USA
  • Awesome colours and prints
  • Double gussets for optimal leak prevention
  • Inner flaps keep the insert in place
  • Double row of waist snaps
  • Large enough to cover bulky fitted diapers without gaping
  • Smartfold prefolds are competitively priced ($10–$11 each)
  • Hemp-cotton blend is a high-performance and sustainable diapering fibre

Things I like less about the Too Smart cover and Smartfold prefolds:

  • I prefer covers with elastic at the front waist for a bit more stretch at the tummy.
  • There is some wrinkling in the centre, sandwiched layer of the prefold. Perhaps the hidden layer of material didn’t shrink as much as the outside layers. This doesn’t impact performance but I can feel the lump of extra fabric.
  • At CAD$26.40, this is the most expensive one-size cover I’ve ever reviewed, and I have trouble justifying the price.

I’m a big advocate of North American manufacturing, and hemp is my bums-down favourite cloth diapering fibre. I think Smartfold prefolds are an excellent solution for heavy wetters, and at $11 for the largest version they are competitively priced. The Too Smart cover is at least $5 more than similar one-size, North American-made diaper covers on the market, and I confess I’m not able to justify the higher price point.
