Kawaii Newborn Pocket Diapers Review

If you are looking for a very affordable newborn diaper to bridge the gap until your one-size stash fits, in theory, Kawaii’s newborn options, retailing for about $8, would seem ideal. The funny thing, however, is that by the time Little Miss Cub fit into her Kawaii newborn diapers, she also fit into many of our one-size diapers!

Sherbrooke, Quebec’s Boutique Le Chaton Vert sent me Kawaii’s three newborn designs:

Because of its stretch, this newborn diaper took the longest to give us a decent fit. And, even at 10 or so pounds, I found we would still get leg leaks because the diaper was loose. In this pictures she’s probably about 8 lbs. It’s all matchy matchy, but it is leaky leaky at the legs. I found I had to really pull up on the wings to get the right fit around her legs even as she grew:

The Pure & Natural

Here’s a look inside the Pure & Natural:

We started to get a good, snug fit by about the 10 lb mark, as seen below. Before that, there were major leg gaps.

In terms of absorption, I rarely am satisfied using microfiber all by itself. But the addition of a hemp booster behind the microfiber insert makes for an awesome, thirsty combo that lasts us three hours.

The « New » Pure & Natural

And a peak inside, note the double gussets that are the main difference from its predecessor:

The main difference between this design and its predecessor would be the addition of the internal double gussets, and different hook & loop closures. Both designs come with the same two microfiber inserts.

To get a good fit, I really had to pull up on the wings to get some semblance of snugness around her legs when she was this small.

If you have a big newborn…

So, my main issue with the Kawaii newborn selection is not that they don’t perform well, it’s that they were too big. Take a look at the Kawaii design compared to a « true » newborn diaper and a one-size diaper snapped to its smallest:

Since you generally purchase newborn models so that they fit from birth, and you use them until your one-size models fit well, I guess I don’t see the point of having newborn diapers that fit up to 22 lbs. (Or, for that matter, newborn models that don’t fit on an actual newborn.) That said, if you generally have larger babies, these would totally work for you, except, so would most one-size models. I suppose that if you are planning to diaper exclusively with Kawaii’s designs, then, considering that their one-size model is also very large, maybe you would need their newborn version, too.

I checked in with other Moms who have used Kawaii newborns, and the opinions are divided. I’ve got some who say they fit them great even at 6 lbs, and others who, like me, had to wait til baby grew quite a bit to get a good fit.

Main differences between the three models:

So, obviously, there’s the difference of bamboo versus microfiber, but there’s also a difference in hook & loop closures and overall cut:

I prefer the wider waistband of the « new » Pure & Natural (far right), but the wider hook & loop of the « old style » (middle). I’m not much a fan of the closure on the bamboo version at all.

Both our Bamboo and our « old style » Pure & Natural have less sticky laundry tabs that tend to not keep the velcro secure during washing.

Bottom Line:

If you birth big babies and are choosing a brand of one-size diapers that start to fit only when baby is quite a bit bigger (off the top of my head, I’d include Kawaii, and Blueberry and Sweet Pea AIOs in that list, as their one-size models don’t fit well yet and she is now 12 lbs), then I can see the utility of some Kawaii Newborn Pockets for your stash. But if you need a tiny newborn diaper to bridge the gap until your BumGenius or similarly-size one-size diapers fit, then these would not be the best option.
