Omaïki 3.Ö Three-in-One Cloth Diaper Review

Omaïki cloth diapers are, like Cub, proudly made in Québec! You can take the girl out of La Belle Province, but you can’t take her love of made-in-Québec diapers. Omaïki is among the ranks of popular Québec brands that have crossed over into the rest of Canada and that are starting to pierce the competitive US market, too.

The Omaïki 3.Ö has many features in common with its AIO sister, which I reviewed here. The inner lining is my favourite synthetic stay-dry material: athletic wicking jersey. It also features a double gusset, a feature that seems to be disappearing from most big brands due to the Kanga Care patent. Omaïki is one of the few non-WAHM brands to use this rather than microsuede or fleece. The absorbent insert is Omaïki’s signature Bamboo Evolutive Insert, probably one of the thinnest inserts on the market and surprisingly absorbent despite the trimness.

The 3.Ö, like many diapers seem to be these days, is marketed as a 3-in-1 style: if you snap the inserts in, it’s an All-in-One, if you lay the insert on top of the pocket, it’s an All-in-Two, and if you just stuff the insert in the pocket like I do, it’s a pocket diaper. Like pretty much all diapers of this design, it performs best as a pocket diaper! Available in snaps or aplix and designed to fit 8-35 lbs, the diaper retails for $28.50 CAD with the insert included.

Things I love about the Omaïki 3.Ö:

Stay-dry material is athletic wicking jersey which I find easier to launder than fleece or microsuede, and more breathable;
Included insert is bamboo: natural fibers for the win!
The rise is nice and tall, and the overall cut of the diaper is generous, since I’m still diapering a 35 lb preschooler;
The diaper has pocket openings at the front and back, which makes for easier stuffing and allows the user to choose: I really hate it when a diaper pocket only opens at the front!
Trim fit thanks to the super slim insert;
Made in Canada! Made in Canada! And the price point is fair and reflects that it is Made in Canada! Made in Canada!

Things I love less about the Omaïki 3.Ö:

The double gusset: I know it’s a major selling point for lots of people, but I’m just not crazy about double gussets! I find messy poops are tricky to clean out of them, and in particular, the gusset in the 3.Ö seems to irritate Cub’s inner thigh, leaving some redness each time he wears it;
The leg casing seems to leave the inner athletic wicking jersey prone to rolling outwards, which you can see a bit on the left side of the diaper in this picture (this can lead to wicking if you forget to roll the fabric back in):

The design of the aplix closure just isn’t my favourite. I prefer aplix tabs that extend past the PUL (like TotsBots and BumGenius);
I find the bamboo insert a bit narrow, and I think this is what caused our one leak: the pee didn’t get absorbed because it actually flowed to the sides, past the outer edges of the insert. To remedy this, I’d boost with a wider microfiber insert directly under the pocket, which is something I do with almost all my pocket diapers anyway.

Conclusion:

The Omaïki 3.Ö has a lot going for it, and if the double gussets are my least favourite feature, they could very well be your favourite one! I know there are a lot of cloth diapering families who swear by double gussets and who would be glad to find another double-gusseted, natural-fiber-insert pocket diaper on the market. Because of my lack of love for double gussets, I definitely prefer the AIÖ because it still features the bamboo inserts, athletic wicking jersey and the generous fit that I love.

In terms of price, I think it’s important to note that for under $30, you’ve got a diaper with a natural fiber insert that is 100% made in Canada. (Compare to a Rumparooz G2, made in China, which can run up to $31.99 and only comes with a microfiber insert.) I’m eager to try the fit on Little Miss Cub when she (finally) arrives, and I will keep you updated on how well the 3.Ö performs on a newborn!
