Au Fait Mama Longsleeve Nourish Maternity Shirt Review

Au Fait Mama Nourish Maternity Shirt Review

Pregnancy clothing is synonymous with comfort, flexibility, generous stretch, soft seams… okay, who am I kidding? That is how I choose all of my clothing, pregnant or not. And while there are many maternity shirts on the market that I would quickly pack away postpartum, Au Fait Mama’s creations are perfectly suited to postpartum wear, even if your youngest is 5 years old.

The first Au Fait Mama piece to grace my wardrobe came long after I had given birth to Cub, but while I was still nursing him. Like the Long-sleeve Nourish Shirt, the Nature Tank I reviewed last summer is extra long in the torso with a thicker band of fabric at the hem to avoid riding up,  a lovely stretch to the neckline allowing you to pull down the shirt to nurse while your belly remains covered, and a form hugging but flattering drape that makes me feel confident every time I wear it.

I am most certain that my Nourish Shirt will serve me the same way once Cub 2.0 is born, but for now I am reviewing it as a pregnancy top: a top to accommodate my growing belly and (thankfully expanding) bust.

The same thick band at the hem that keeps the top from riding up while nursing also keeps the top secure below my bump. One of my greatest wardrobe pet peeves is having my lower back exposed: I get cold! (Also, I am usually wearing the wrong underwear for the occasion and I don’t like showing it off.) The sleeves are nice and long, and also don’t bunch up when I put on my coat. The neckline is flattering without being too revealing: I feel extremely comfortable wearing this top.

A bizarre and appreciated side effect of this pregnancy is that I seem to have ceased sweating. I feel like I haven’t stopped sweating since I began when I was eleven. Why am I telling you this? Because my lack of sweating means I don’t have to wash my shirts at the end of every day, which means I have been choosing my Nourish Shirt for three or four days in a row, until it absolutely must hit the laundry.

The price point on Au Fait Mama is higher than I typically spend on my own clothing. However, something I’m slowly learning is that investing in high-quality, ethically-made pieces ends up costing the same if I look at the life cycle of the « fast fashion » choices I normally make. And since Au Fait Mama’s tops are hands down completely wearable even when not pregnant or nursing (and you won’t look like you’re wearing maternity clothes, I promise), the price tag is well worth it.
