For better or for worse, my 4-year-old daughter is sandwiched between a 7-year-old brother and 18-month-old twins … so she rarely gets an activity that’s just for her.
So when Fisher-Price®—a brand whose toys from the 80s and 90s are still hot commodities when my kids visit their grandparents—came calling with new building toys designed specifically for preschoolers, I jumped at the chance to get building with Miss Cub.
In the precious time when her big brother is at school and her baby brothers are napping, Miss Cub and I unboxed Fisher-Price®’s new Wonder Builders™ design system to see what it was all about and was pleasantly surprised to learn that kids can build multiple configurations with one toy set.
As a former educator, I love open-ended play systems because creativity and imagination are at the forefront. As a parent, I love construction toys that can be enjoyed as stand-alone sets or by combining multiple kits and that are simple enough for the child to explore without a grown-up’s constant assistance.
Fisher Price®’s Wonder Builders™ design system checks all those boxes and more!
We started out with the Build Around Town™ starter kit. Oftentimes, “starter kit” denotes a product that is only fun once you buy additional accessories. This is not the case with the Build Around Town™ kit. There’s enough in the box for a child to play and create to their heart’s content.
Unlike interlocking wooden track sets, the wooden “tracks” in Wonder Builders™ sets are also for creating buildings, furniture, trees and more. Connect them using soft oval joiner pieces and any Wonder Builders™ vehicle can glide along them.
Use the assembly bases and roof sections to build a farmer’s market and café! Line the shelves with eggs and other produce.
Miss Cub loves to place the plants into the moon-shaped garden.
The included wooden characters are adorable and slide into the Wonder Builder™ vehicles, into an adorable flannel sleeping bag or onto a hammock in the Soft Slumber Campground™ set. (My personal favourite.)
My daughter has assigned identities to each of her characters, with the raccoon being her older brother.
As you can see, Wonder Builders™ kits combine the fun of track toys and building toys, with a make-believe twist. The accessories that come with each kit have a dollhouse feel, and the premium soft goods elements in the Campground set remind me of playing with a felt board when I was a kid. The campground has trees, a campfire, a hammock and a tent made from thick and colourful felt.
Sure to be every child’s favourite element—you can also build an outhouse!
For kids who love everything and anything with wheels, the Wonder Builders™ sets don’t disappoint! A tractor, a jeep, bicycles and a school bus are found in the sets we received. Individual Wonder Builders™ vehicles can also be purchased separately, each one coming with its own little character.
Honestly, the vehicles are fun just on their own and are a definite favourite of the twins, who are too young to play with the full sets due to the small accessories.
The Learn & Play Academy™ has a school bus, playground equipment, a schoolhouse and a treehouse for kids to create using Wonder Builders™ components.
I can’t wait to unbox this one with Miss Cub at our next naptime play date!
Endless Play for Every Child
The Fisher-Price® Wonder Builders™ design system is creative play at its finest: follow the instructions or your imagination, combine components in endless configurations, and whether your child is more into building structures (and knocking them down) or building make-believe worlds (where your brother can be a raccoon), this system is sure to rock their socks.
