My husband and I really love Christmas. We were in a long-distance relationship for three years until I moved across the country, so Christmas has always been particularly special for us. It was one of the few times of the year we were actually together. Thinking about it now, our first Christmas together was also the first time we ever spent a concentrated amount of time together as a couple. I flew out to Spain—where he was on an exchange—and stayed with him for six weeks. We’d only been dating since April of that same year and had been “long distance” for 99% of that time; in hindsight it was kind of crazy that we thought it would work for me to move in with him for six weeks in a foreign country. Alas, here we are on the eve of our eleventh Christmas together!
Besides Christmas, my husband really loves beer. One of the highlights of travelling in Europe that Christmas was a visit to a bar in Brussels that had hundreds of types of beer from all over the globe. He was like a kid in a candy store as he poured over the menu! (I had a Canada Dry ginger ale.) In Aachen, Germany, it was beer and bratwurst at the Christmas market. In Valladolid, it was tapas with una cerveza or dos. Apparently, we knew even then that we would one day have a family together, because I remember talking about taking our children back to Spain to re-live our first Christmas memories.
We might not be travelling the world with our children this holiday season, but I found the perfect gift for Papa Wolf that encompasses his love of Christmas, his love of beer and his dreams of travel:
The Craft BeerAdvent® Calendar!
We all know the joys of opening a new little window on an advent calendar from December 1st to 24th, but who knew you could open a somewhat larger window and pull out a bottle of carefully chosen craft beer from around the world? I will quote my husband on this one: “It’s a Christmas miracle!”
The calendar’s contents are a closely guarded secret, and recipients can follow along (starting December 1) on the BeerAdvent® Facebook page to read tasting notes and backstories for each beer. I have it on good authority that the calendar contains a variety of beers including strong ales, imperial stouts, porters, bitters, blond ales and more. (I have no idea what any of those things mean—I’m a wine girl.)
The way to my husband’s heart is not through food, which is lucky since I am an average cook at best. No, the way to his heart is through beer. I suspect beer for him is like my morning latte and evening glass of red wine. For the purposes of this blog post, I let him open his first beer early, and he wanted me to take a picture of just how this made him feel:
I hope he is currently searching the internet for some kind of coffee-wine hybrid calendar for me …
The kids have a LEGO® and a PlayMobil® calendar to open starting December 1st, but they’re even more excited for their dad to start opening his BeerAdvent® Calendar.
If someone you love needs a BeerAdvent® Calendar and you live in western Canada, you may still be able to get your hands on one! Check their Facebook page to find one near you, or call them at 1-877-519-9955.
