Moving to Alberta last year, I had some … shall we say … preconceptions about Wild Rose Country. I didn’t expect to find a thriving cloth-diapering and babywearing community, nor an array of homegrown artisans appealing to my “crunchy mama” sensibilities. Beef. Oil. Cowboy hats. That’s what I expected. Sure, there’s plenty of that (which isn’t a bad thing), but there are also local businesses like the Red Deer-based company to which I am about to introduce you. With a birth doula at the helm, MoonLily Wellness crafts delightful natural care products like soaps, lotions, soaks and balms, in addition to an array of essential oils-based goodies. There’s something at MoonLily for everyone on your holiday-shopping list. Yes, even for the cowboys!
For Moms
One of my very dear friends is due with her first child this January, and I can’t wait for her to unwrap MoonLily’s Postpartum Care Pack! This gift set contains herbal lactation tea (with a punny name after my own heart: “Nurse-Me-Rhyme”), nipple butter, PeriCare spray and a postpartum soak. When I was pregnant with my first, I started diligently applying nipple butter even before he was born in the hopes of softening my virgin nips for suckling. I was lucky with both my babies to not have to deal with cracked and sore nipples for long, and the left over nipple butter makes great lip balm! Until you’ve given birth, it’s hard to even conceive of the kind of TLC you’re going to want to bestow on your perineal area. In fact, perineal wasn’t even a word I’d ever used until pregnancy. I remember being very grateful for online shopping as I ordered a postpartum soak and peri-spray right from my hospital bed.
Teacher gift idea alert! Teacher gift idea alert! In a former life, I was a teacher. So I think I have the authority to give MoonLily’s Candy Cane Body Lotion my “teacher gift” seal of approval. Although the vast majority of my readers are mothers, the teacher receiving this gift need not be a mom. She need simply have appendages in need of moisturization and a tingling sensation. (Yes, that is an intentional—and amazing—rhyme.) I don’t much care for eating candy canes but wrapping my body in spearmint and pepperminty goodness? Plus Ylang Ylang? So. Much. Yes. It is a creamy and delicious lotion that is my absolute new favourite thing.
For Dads
Because beards are not my area of expertise, I just did a bit of recon on the topic and discovered that 55% of the world’s men have some kind of facial hair. Fun fact: until a couple of years ago, my mother (and thus everyone in my family) had never seen my father without a moustache. My husband has a beard sometimes. In fact, he grew a “pregnancy beard” during my first pregnancy. (Is that even a thing?) Essentially he started growing it and didn’t shave it till baby was born. It was atrocious. It would’ve likely been at least a bit softer and smelled better if he’d had some MoonLily beard oil. Available in three manly-man scents—West Coast, Dark Roast and Woodsman—MoonLily’s beard oil is sure to impress all the Decembeard participants on your list!
For Kids
Just for the record, I do not believe that essential oils are a cure-all for childhood ailments, and I am not going to use essential oils in lieu of prescribed medications. We will be getting our flu shots as soon as the kids get over their colds! (I’m the daughter of a pharmacist—I love me some pills!) However, I see essential oils as complementary to my beloved modern medicine. I have a modest collection of essential oils, most of which I don’t really know what to do with. When using with children, the proper dilution of essential oils is of the utmost importance, so I basically don’t use them at all on my kids for fear of doing more harm than good. That’s why MoonLily’s Super Kids Scent Kit is so awesome! It contains six pre-diluted essential oil combos in easy-to-apply roll-on bottles, all bundled up in a nifty storage pouch that makes me feel like a professional. Our favourite Super Kids formula so far is Cough Crusader to help with coughs and congestion. With cold and flu season upon us, I’ll take all the help I can get, so Cub has been happily applying Mister Invincible to his feet at bedtime. I’m putting dabs of Marvel Mouth behind Little Miss’s ears to help with teething pain, and if anything, it smells amazing!
Speaking of amazing smells: I am officially addicted to the scent of Baby Breathe Easy. We don’t own a diffuser (and I call myself crunchy!), but Jasmine at MoonLily suggested I apply a few drops to a tissue and place it under my children’s pillows. Because at least one of my offspring sleeps with me every night, I have been enjoying the refreshing and nasal-congestion-fighting effects of sweet orange essential oil, fir needle essential oil and cinnamon leaf essential oil. Honestly, it makes my bed smell like Christmas. If essential oils aren’t your thing, MoonLily also has a full range of bath and body products for babies and kids!
For the Whole Family
MoonLily makes an all-natural, petroleum-free chest rub to ease sniffles and coughs. When I was a kid, I used to beg my mom to rub Vicks VapoRub on my chest like the mom in the commercials. She hated how it was sticky and impossible to wash off her hands … so she didn’t do this very often! MoonLily’s Chest Rub is olive oil-based, so it wipes off easily and without (so far) staining our pajamas.
For another gift the whole family can enjoy, check out MoonLily’s handcrafted soaps. (There’s a candy cane one!) Once upon a time, Papa Wolf was going to start making his own soap. (He dreams of living off the grid and has a library of “do it yourself” titles to prove it.) Around the time he dropped lye on our living room floor, we agreed to leave the soap making to the experts. For the Starbucks PSL fans on your list, there’s even a pumpkin spice bar! Handcrafted soaps make great gifts for pretty much anyone on your list—everyone (we hope) uses soap!

Thanks for introducing these awesome products!! I love the smell of candy cane lotion, especially if it’s naturally made! Do you think the Super Kids would work on adults? Will you be doing a giveaway with their products? I don’t want to miss it! I will check out their site, thank you!?

Hi Kristen! There’s no giveaway planned, and I’d say the best person to ask about Super Kids working on adults would be Jasmine, so I will ask her. I suspect they’re diluted for smaller bodies.
Jasmine says
Hi Kristen, the Super Kids are diluted enough to be safe for our littles, but they will still be effective for adults. I use them often! In most general cases they’re just as effective for adults as our regular Roll Ons.
