Jewelry doesn’t usually serve much of a purpose. I am notorious for deciding I need to wear more jewelry so I can look more like a grown-up (I associate well-chosen jewelry pieces with adults, like my Mom!), and then quickly remembering that I hate the hassle of wearing jewelry. Does it match? Do I have to take it off in the shower? Do I have to fuss with clasps? Yup, even before children, I didn’t wear much jewelry.
But if my jewelry is serving a purpose beyond looking cute? Now you’re talking! Vancouver-based Between You & Me sent me a teething/nursing necklace and carrier toy, both made with food-grade silicone beads and natural maple hardwood.
Given my inability to choose matching colours, I told her I had a Songbird-print Tula, and she made them to match!
Little Miss Cub doesn’t have teeth poking through yet, but it’s in the very near future. Right now, my necklace serves as something to grab while she’s nursing. If I’m not wearing my necklace, she tends to claw at my breasts and scratch me with her carefully sharpened little claws.
Big Brother Cub is also kind of obsessed with this necklace. When we first received it, I wasn’t actually allowed to wear it, it was his. Now, when I am squatting in front of him while he’s on the potty (joy!), he likes to play with each bead, counting them and naming the colours.
The carrier accessory attaches easily to the strap of my Tula or any other carrier, and I am confident that as soon as those chompers start coming through, it’ll get plenty of use. For now, I like to put it in her hands when she’s sitting in her bouncy chair so she can suck on it.
I wear my Between You & Me necklace pretty much every day, bringing a bit of glamour to the monotony of running errands with two kids. (Okay, it’s not monotonous, it’s insanity…)
My readers blew up my Facebook feed, reassuring me that I’m not the only babywearing Mama who drives like this! (I’m in the parking lot— of course the seat belt gets done up!)
My teething necklace is funky, and passes as regular jewelry. I know this because the (young and hip) waitress at our local breakfast joint totally complimented me on it the other day!
It’s official! She’s teething, and she loooooves her Mama’s teething jewelry!
