Mini Ella Bella Bum? Yes please! The Ella Bella Size 1 or Newborn model has all the awesomeness of the one-size version which we reviewed here, just on a smaller scale.

Above is a comparison of the newborn model on its largest rise, and the one-size model on its smallest rise. Even on its smallest rise, at just shy of 12 lbs, the one-size EBB is still too loose at the legs for Little Miss Cub, so if you’re an EBB lover, I’d definitely recommend getting some Size 1s!

I chose the exterior PUL colour and inner AWJ: our wedding colours!

Little Miss Cub would have been just north of 8 lbs the first time I put her EBB on her, and the fit was lovely.

The problem was that I really didn’t quite know how to stuff this newborn pocket. There was a lot of trial an error that had nothing to do with the performance of the pocket cover itself. In the end, the only inserts I had that fit were my Omaiki bamboo inserts (narrow and trim enough) and I am now using the small EBB insert that came with my one-size model plus my favourite newborn booster, which is by Nuggles. (The latter combo is pictured below. I’ve been putting the booster on top of the pocket.)

Things I love about our EBB Newborn Pocket:

  • The stretchy, soft exterior PUL for a flexible fit that doesn’t dig into little tummies;

  • Athletic wicking jersey: love it more than fleece as a stay dry layer;
  • Snug back elastic to contain you know what;
  • Adorable attention to detail typical of EBB: my purple and green snaps match perfectly!
  • Generous sizing for a newborn diaper: some of our newborn diapers that are marketed as going up to 15 lbs are already too small, and she’s just shy of 12 lbs now.

Things I like less about our EBB Newborn Pocket:

  • The lack of an included insert meant a lot of trial and error (and leaks) as I tried to figure out how to stuff our EBB. Trifolds such as AppleCheeks and Öko Créations, or prefolds like Bummis, my go-to stuffing for AppleCheeks Size 1s (the only other diaper we are currently using as a pocket) are too bulky to fit. {I will be received an EBB newborn insert soon, so I’ll keep you updated!}
