BumGenius diapers get a lot of love in our house: Cub’s go-to daycare diapers were his BumGenius 4.0s in hook and loop, stuffed with our Öko Creations hemp inserts. We have quite a few BG pockets, in fact, and a bit of a weakness for some of the most coveted prints, like Jules, Irwin and Harper.
Naturally, I wanted to try a couple newborn BumGenius diapers, since any cloth diaper blogger worth her chops should be well versed on the entire Cotton Babies line up!
Here’s what you’re getting with a BG newborn diaper:
As soon as her umbilical stump fell off (day four, I believe), we were into our BGs. Easy breezy to use thanks to the hook and loop and lack of rise snaps, I liked tossing them in my purse as my back-up diapers on a short outing, knowing it would be easy to change her even in the car thanks to the user-friendly design. If I hadn’t been insisting on changing 99.99% of all diapers due to wanting to take mental notes for my reviews, this one would surely have been Papa’s favourite!
My issue with our BGs, however, is the lack of room for growth at the waist. By 10 lbs, we can barely secure the diaper at her hips.
On the left, she’s close to 7 lbs, and on the right, just over 10 lbs:
Things I love about our BG Newborn AIOs:
- Microsuede stay-dry layer against baby’s skin;
- Super user friendly;
- Fairly quick to dry thanks to synthetic materials;
- Very trim.
Things I love less about our BG Newborn AIOs:
- Lack of umbilical cut-out makes it a tough fit prior to the stump falling off;
- Not enough room to grow at the waist, they’re almost too small now at 10 lbs (6 weeks old);
- Tricky to add absorbency, as with any AIO where the soaker is entirely sewn in;
- Not suitable for overnight use: about two hours is their max absorbency for us without a booster. (If you need to boost, my favourite newborn booster is by Nuggles.)
Bottom Line:
Newborns come in all shapes and sizes, and based on comments on my Facebook page, there are Moms who have been able to get three months’ use out of their BG newborn diapers, because their babies didn’t reach 12 lbs until then. I realize that it can be pretty hard to know how big your baby will be at birth and how quickly she’ll grow, but if you’re anticipating a lower-than-average percentile squish, you’d definitely get more use out of these trim and user-friendly diapers! At just over 10 lbs now, Little Miss Cub is able to wear her BumGenius one-size pockets, by the way.
