BumGenius Newborn AIO Review

BumGenius Newborn AIO Review ~ Maman Loup's Den

I received this product free for review. All opinions remain my own.

BumGenius diapers get a lot of love in our house: Cub’s go-to daycare diapers were his BumGenius 4.0s in hook and loop, stuffed with our Öko Creations hemp inserts. We have quite a few BG pockets, in fact, and a bit of a weakness for some of the most coveted prints, like Jules, Irwin and Harper.

Naturally, I wanted to try a couple newborn BumGenius diapers, since any cloth diaper blogger worth her chops should be well versed on the entire Cotton Babies line up!

Here’s what you’re getting with a BG newborn diaper:

BumGenius Newborn AIO Review ~ Maman Loup's Den

BumGenius Newborn AIO Review ~ Maman Loup's Den ~ 2As soon as her umbilical stump fell off (day four, I believe), we were into our BGs. Easy breezy to use thanks to the hook and loop and lack of rise snaps, I liked tossing them in my purse as my back-up diapers on a short outing, knowing it would be easy to change her even in the car thanks to the user-friendly design. If I hadn’t been insisting on changing 99.99% of all diapers due to wanting to take mental notes for my reviews, this one would surely have been Papa’s favourite!

My issue with our BGs, however, is the lack of room for growth at the waist. By 10 lbs, we can barely secure the diaper at her hips.

On the left, she’s close to 7 lbs, and on the right, just over 10 lbs:

Things I love about our BG Newborn AIOs:

  • Microsuede stay-dry layer against baby’s skin;
  • Super user friendly;
  • Fairly quick to dry thanks to synthetic materials;
  • Very trim.

Things I love less about our BG Newborn AIOs:

  • Lack of umbilical cut-out makes it a tough fit prior to the stump falling off;
  • Not enough room to grow at the waist, they’re almost too small now at 10 lbs (6 weeks old);
  • Tricky to add absorbency, as with any AIO where the soaker is entirely sewn in;
  • Not suitable for overnight use: about two hours is their max absorbency for us without a booster. (If you need to boost, my favourite newborn booster is by Nuggles.)

Bottom Line:

Newborns come in all shapes and sizes, and based on comments on my Facebook page, there are Moms who have been able to get three months’ use out of their BG newborn diapers, because their babies didn’t reach 12 lbs until then. I realize that it can be pretty hard to know how big your baby will be at birth and how quickly she’ll grow, but if you’re anticipating a lower-than-average percentile squish, you’d definitely get more use out of these trim and user-friendly diapers! At just over 10 lbs now, Little Miss Cub is able to wear her BumGenius one-size pockets, by the way.

    I’m glad for this review of such a popular diaper. I’m super new to CDING (babe isn’t due till Dec 2015) so I am researching as much as possible. I do tend to have smaller babies but am hesitant to buy a newborn stash as I want to get good use as this will be my last babes. thanks for the straight forward honest review.

  7. Amélie

    Baby 2 will come in a few weeks, can’t wait to try those on my own! First time I will be using newborn cloth diaper, and I have some BG Newborn waiting for the little girl!

  8. Vanessa Bee

    I have a couple 4.0’s and I like them but I’m really curious about the Elemental.

  9. Katya Carbonneau

    I started off with 4.0 which I love ! But I’m starting to hate stuffing…. And then I tried the freetimes ! Now I need more freetimes #buyallthediapers

  10. Rebecca T

    I am so excited to start using cloth diapers with my first baby (due in two weeks). I have a few 4.0, elemental and freetime diapers that I can’t wait to try out! I love all of the colours!

  11. Jenna S

    I like the the 4.0 also!

  12. Kasia Curry

    We used the 4.0s for my son and i owned 5 Alberts! !! Lol! They were my favourite print.
    We use mostly another brand for my daughter but i have a few BG 4.0s for her. 🙂
    Would LOOOVE to add the new Albert.

    I didn’t know about the nb version for my son, althoigh i wish i had. He was (and is still!) So skinny.

    I love the patterns and colours, when I think back to my own cloth diapers it’s no comparison at all. These are all beautiful, I love the BG 4.0s but would love the new born for my next grandchild due in March. Thanks for the chance to win. 🙂

  14. I actually had a very tiny newborn baby to try this diaper on, and my issue with it was what the rise was awfully high compared to the width of the diaper. Even at 6 weeks old it was pretty much level with her belly button (and TOTALLY not enough absorbency for her super peeing power!). But just like you, readers responded that they TOTALLY agreed with me or else COMPLETELY disagreed and thought they were the best newborn diaper EVER, so you really never know! 🙂 (And also, her stump fell off in a few days??? I think we had to wait for something like 2 weeks for Emily’s to fall off, and since she was so itty bitty we didn’t have ANY cloth diapers to use until that happened!! Babies really do come in all shapes and sizes!) 🙂

    I really love the Flip covers, they never leak. I haven’t had a chance to try a proper BumGenius diaper.

  16. ScottishMrs

    We love the BG 4.0s. The Flips didn’t fit as well for us even though we prefer covers. I’m interested in the NB for next time, though I much prefer a snap closure.

  17. stingaling

    I don’t have any BG in my stash, so would love to try any and all of them. I am most curious about the Elementals, though

  18. Sarah Thurston

    Elementals are my favorite of the bum genius diapers. Though depending on tge baby/day/my mood/Jupiter’s location 😉 flip covers abd prefolds are great too.

    We’ve been wanting to try BG’s! They seem to be very popular. Here’s hoping we can try them soon! Albert is so adorable!

  23. Cassandra Rae

    I can’t wait to try these with my newborn! My first was like 6 lbs at birth and only Gaines about a lb a month. I think I make small babies

  24. Mystika Faith

    I used a variety of Bumgenius diapers with my last baby, but only after he was a few months old. I’m pregnant again and am really wanting to tryout the Bumgenius newborn diapers 🙂

  25. Sabrina D’Arcy

    I’d like to try a Freetime most.

  26. Christine Cee

    I would love to try any of the newborn BG diapers. I have only one BG diaper in my very small stash so far and would love to add to it! First is due in a few weeks so I am slowly building the stash. Running out of time lol I want to find what works and the BG newborn AIOs would be a perfect start !! The 4.0s look awesome too.

    Accidentally submitted an entry even though I’m in the US. Oops sorry!! But good luck to the Canadian entrants! Awesome giveaway. 🙂

  28. Kristin D

    I was gifted some BG 3.0s from a friend. I would love to have some 4.0s to try out…and Albert happens to be my favourite print!!!
