I received these products free for review. All opinions remain my own.
As Social Media Manager for Funky Fluff, I’ve known about the big changes to their line of diapers for many months now, and been sworn to secrecy. In fact, I was the one that christened the line “Lux.” I’m so excited that Lux has been revealed and is now available for purchase from your favourite Funky Fluff retailer!
The new Funky Fluff Lux Line Up:
- Lux Stay Dry Shell;
- Lux Bamboo Shell;
- Lux Bamboo Terry Soakers;
- deLux Hemp/Bamboo Soakers {aka: hempboo};
- Hemp Boosters;
- Two new prints: Chantilly & Maritime.
What’s Changed?
- Microfiber has been retired;
- Both the Bamboo and Stay Dry Systems come with hourglass-shaped Lux Bamboo Terry Soakers (rather than the Stay Dry coming with microfiber);
Here’s how the new bamboo soakers compare to the 2.0 soakers:
- The shells have been redesigned:
As with the 1.0 and 2.0, the inserts can still be snapped into the shells if desired, and the diapers can be used as pockets, AIOs or AI2s.
Here you can see the slightly different cut of the shell compared to a Love Bug 2.0:
And the extra layer of PUL at the waist snaps:
- New product: deLux soakers which combine hemp and bamboo (an industry first);
- New product: hemp boosters (Funky Fluff boosters were previously bamboo).
Here’s how the new boosters compare to Funky Fluff’s bamboo boosters (middle) and AMP 3-ply hemp boosters (left.)
Funky Fluff Lux Review
So now that you know what the deal is with the new Funky Fluff Lux line, it’s time to find out what I think of it. It will come as no surprise that I am psyched about the retirement of microfiber: I am a big fan of natural fibers as the main absorbent component of any cloth diaper system. My bud Stefanie, a die-hard microfiber fan, is even a convert, telling me:
I have always loved microfiber inserts (call me crazy), so I was a little worried when I heard that Funky Fluff was discontinuing their microfiber inserts. Then I tried the new Funky Fluff LUX hemp/bamboo inserts, or as I like to call them Hempboo. These are simply amazing! They are super trim and super absorbent. I often just use the small hempboo for my 8 week old, and I get a super trim diaper that lasts for 3-4 hours easily. They wash up like a dream and dry super fast for natural fibre inserts. I’ve been converted! The LUX fit is amazeballs! Absorbency is out of this world! Goodbye microfiber, hello Hempboo!
Overall the new cut of the diaper seems to lend itself to a better fit on a newborn, as I’ve been testing both our 2.0s and our new Lux shells on Little Miss Cub, and definitely prefer the fit of Lux. Here she is wearing the new prints at about 7.5 – 8lbs and 3 weeks old:
We use the smaller deLux insert in our stay dry shell, as an AI2 (I always put a natural fiber against newborn skin as I find synthetic tends to cause repelling since baby’s body doesn’t put enough pressure on the urine for it to pass through.)
We use the smaller bamboo terry insert in the pocket of the bamboo shell.
As you can see, even on her wee little legs, the fit is excellent:
And here is Little Miss Cub’s buddy, Funky Fluff Laundry Guru’s son, at 7 weeks old and 11.5 lbs:
What I love most about the new Funky Fluff Lux line up:
- Better fit on a tiny squish compared to our 2.0s, and the fit on kids at the upper weight limit is also awesome! [With the new baby, I have lost all patience for trying to get Cub to pose in diapers, by the way.] Check out Funky Fluff Ambassadors, Sheena and Carli’s sons who both weigh in at 34 lbs:
This is the best I could do with Cub:
- The deLux hemp/bamboo inserts are amazing: they dry quickly as the two layers are only sewn together down the middle and they marry the properties of bamboo and hemp;
- The wider, hourglass shape of the inserts and boosters seems more comfortable and creates more coverage, which I think will improve leg leaks;
- The bamboo inserts are thicker and don’t “bacon” (get wrinkly at the edges after washing/drying);
- The hemp boosters are versatile and super effective. I have been using them as my top layer overnight on Cub, and a bottom layer overnight for Little Miss Cub;
- Cloth diaperers who may not be 100% Funky Fluff users (*gasp*) will love the deLux inserts in a variety of other pocket diapers or covers: these inserts are thirsty and the first on the market to combine hemp and bamboo.
What I like less about the new Funky Fluff line up:
- I would personally have kept the line simpler. If it were up to me, the deLux inserts would be standard with either shell and I would eliminate the bamboo-only inserts;
- In my dream world, it would be possible to have Funky Fluff diapers be not only Canadian designed and owned, but also manufactured. I know it’s a dream for Kathy and Tricia, and I hope it can one day be a reality!
