As you know, I’m a huge advocate of midwifery care, and was extremely glad to find a midwife upon my arrival in Calgary this April! My midwife, not to brag, just happens to be a past President of the Alberta Association of Midwives. Needless to say, she is a very active advocate of midwifery care in our province.
She’s enlisted my help in spreading the word: all pregnant women seeking midwifery care, even if you know there are no midwives currently serving you area, need to fill out the Alberta Midwifery Request for Care online form.
One of the functions of the system is to track requests for care so that we can demonstrate the need for midwifery services throughout the province, which will support Alberta women in increasing access to midwifery care and in creating a sustainable funding structure for midwifery. All pregnant women in Alberta who are interested in midwifery care are invited to request care, particularly those who do not have midwives in their area. Women across Alberta can register by visiting https://www.
Even though I already have my midwife, I retroactively filled out the form at her request so that I am recorded in the system. It takes five minutes! (Including the time it takes to drag my butt up the stairs to my wallet to get my Alberta Health Card number.)
If you’re in Calgary and not sure which practice to pick… don’t hesitate in selecting MY midwife: Matronae Midwifery! (You don’t need to have any preferred practices in order to sign up, by the way.)
The more requests for care that are submitted, the more proof the Alberta Midwives Association has of the demand and need for more midwives and more services. In Québec, birthing centres are publicly funded! Wouldn’t this be an amazing thing for Alberta? Currently we have only two, and they are both private, meaning families must pay and must vacate quite quickly after birth.
If you want to see greater support and resources for midwifery care in our province, besides signing up once you’re pregnant, my midwife strongly recommends writing to your MLA to express your support for expanded midwifery care in Alberta!
Pregnant Albertans: have you signed up yet?!
