I loathe disposable baby wipes. The don’t clean worth a darn, create endless tons of waste, and certain brands are rife with unsavory and potentially harmful ingredients.
Since Cub was born, I’ve always used cloth wipes. As a newborn, I used plain warm water, then I went through a phase of making my own bum spray, and then I went back to using water (tepid, if Cub’s lucky… cold if I’m in a hurry!).
I’d heard of “wipe cubes” before, but I didn’t actually know what they were. In fact, I thought they were like those magical expandable washcloths I used to get as a kid: tiny until you dropped them in water and they would magically grow into a full-size washcloth. I was wrong! Wipe cubes, or, Baby Bits, as Florida-based creator, Denise calls them, are simply tiny cubes that dissolve in warm water to create a bum spray!
As with any bum spray, you can apply it to the cloth and then wipe, or, as I like to do it, spray it directly on the bum. Cub thinks it’s the greatest thing for me to spritz him at diaper changes!
The ingenuity behind selling wipe bits rather than wipe bottles comes in terms of shipping. It’s both more economical and ecological to expedite little baggies of tiny cubes than crates of bottles full of pre-mixed solution. This savings is passed on to retailers and then on to consumers.
Baby Bits are made of coconut oil, glycerin soap, organic plantain & chickweed herbs, virgin olive oil and pure essential oil of tea tree and lavender. One “bit” dissolves in one cup of hot tap water, and once your spritz bottle is empty, you mix up some more! I have a mini, travel-size spray bottle that I pour a bit in for bums and hands on the go.
I don’t really have anything bad to say about Baby Bits Wipes Solution. I love products that make replacing a disposable convenience item not so overwhelming. Not everyone wants to make their own wipe solution (even I got too lazy to do it), and not everyone is happy wiping only with water. Baby Bits solution smells divine, and I’m confident that the properties of its safe, natural ingredients both clean and hydrate Cub’s sensitive bottom. (Also, fear not, there’s not reason not to use Baby Bits with cloth diapers.)
You can buy Baby Bits from many retailers in the US and Canada, click here to find the one closest to you!

I also tried making my own and went back to just water! We use cloth wipes everywhere except at daycare… what do you do for that? She will do cloth but not sure about wipes… Is that asking too much!?

Amazingly, my son rarely ever poops at Day Care. When it’s just a pee, he doesn’t need a wipe with our stay-dry diaps, but she has a stash of Naty-brand sposies IN CASE of a poop. At first I sent pre-moistened wipes in an old disposable wipe case, which she could use if necessary, but we found she didn’t use them. She was totally cool will me sending pre-moistened wipes, though!
