In my non-mom life, I’m a high school English teacher. One of my favourite parts of the job is helping young readers find books. There’s nothing more satisfying than getting the fit just right so the student devours a book in a weekend. What I’ve learned over the years, though, is that no matter how great a book is, it won’t appeal to all readers. (Though I wish every student would love Harry Potter as much as I do, some just don’t.) I think the same can be said of LipSense lipstick. It’s a great product, but it won’t be for everyone.
I heard about LipSense through social media. As with any unknown product sold online, I was suspicious. Lipstick that would stay put even after eating? Even after kissing my baby? Didn’t seem likely to me. However, people I trusted were REALLY into this lipstick. So when Maman Loup asked if I’d like to test it out for a review, I was on board.
Buying LipSense means getting a personal consultation with a distributor. Rhetta of Rhetta’s Reliable Lips came to my house with her makeup kit. I got to try swatches of various colours, and Rhetta helped me narrow my choices according to my undertone. (If you don’t know what your undertone is, she can help you out.) Even if you buy from her online, you still get her expertise and attention virtually. Given that the lipstick is pricier than one you’d find in a drugstore this personal attention is important. In the end, knowing my proclivity for pinup style, we picked Fly Girl, which really is a great retro red. I’ve been very happy with the colour choice, though Rhetta said exchanges and returns are possible: SeneGence has a satisfaction guarantee of one year on all its products!
The next part of the consultation is learning how to use the product. This is the point when some people may decide this lipstick is not for them. To get the colour to last a full day, there are a number of steps you have to follow: cleaning your lips, drying them, applying three coats of the colour in a single direction and finishing with Glossy Gloss. You may also need to exfoliate your lips before use. It takes more time and practice to put on LipSense lipstick than traditional lipsticks, but once applied IT STAYS ON ALL DAY.
After Rhetta showed me how to apply my new red lipstick, I had to rush off to a dinner party. When I got home four hours later, the colour looked newly applied. There was none of that patchy leftover lipstick that I often discover when I finally see myself in a mirror after supper.
I wore the lipstick regularly for about a month and I learned a few things:
1- The colour, gloss and removal tubes are all exactly the same shape. So be careful when reaching for a tube. You might just, oh, I don’t know, apply the Oops Remover instead of the Glossy Gloss, thereby ruining the work you did applying the colour. You might do that. Not me. Nope, not me at all. An easy fix is to keep the gloss in a separate place, like your purse.
2- The gloss is necessary to protect the colour. That means you need to bring it with you everywhere you go. If, like me, you have a hard time remembering to put things in your bag in the morning, you might want to buy two glosses: one for home and one for your purse.
3- You need to take your time applying the colour. Rushing leads to uneven application and because this stuff is long-wearing, that mistake is going to take time to correct. It’s much easier to get things right the first time.
4- Washable makeup pads have been extremely helpful in the lipstick removal process. The colour will stain washcloths, so having makeup pads that you don’t mind staining is a must. I tried disposable pads to see if they’d work better, but they tended to stick to my lips. So the environmentally friendly option wins! (Rhetta also suggests using baby washcloths from the dollar store.)
5- This colour can last through a pizza lunch followed by a massive downpour when you forget your umbrella. Not that I forgot my umbrella and had to trudge through the rain for five blocks until even my underwear got soaked. Nope. That definitely didn’t happen to me.
You might be thinking “Three coats of colour and gloss? Doesn’t that feel thick?” Surprisingly, LipSense feels lighter than many other lipsticks. It can feel a bit “tight” as it dries, but the gloss helps with this. The gloss is also great on its own because it feels moisturizing but not sticky. It’s also fairly glossy, but as it absorbs, it looks more matte. If you prefer a matte finish, there is also a matte gloss available.
A final note: some distributors suggest avoiding other lip products that contain wax. I confess that I broke this rule after a couple of weeks and didn’t find that there was any real issue.
What I like about LipSense:
- No lipstick smudges to clean off cups
- Great selection of colours
- Reasonable price point for what you get
- Personal touch thanks to distributors
What I like less:
- Application process has a steep learning curve
- Packaging is dated
- Medicinal alcohol aftertaste that stays for quite some time after application (If you’re a science nerd, you may find the chemistry behind LipSense interesting.)
Overall, I am pleasantly surprised by just how much I like my LipSense lipstick. In fact, I’ll be buying a couple more colours with my own cash money. Like the Harry Potter series, while I theoretically understand that some people won’t like it, I’m a big fan.
