Any parent will tell you how important sleep is, both to a new baby and to the rest of the family! Naps are essential to anyone who isn’t sleeping through the night, but they get a bit tricky to come by when there are older kids in the house, or if they have to happen while travelling or on the go. The Gro Company has made good sleep its main focus, and they have a range of products to help maximize every minute of slumber for you and your little one.
When I was approached by them to review some of their products, I had to take a moment to assess the sleeping situation in my house, which includes a baby, a toddler, and two school-aged children. Naps have been difficult for Evan, my six month old son, since he is very sensitive to noise and light. I work five mornings a week in a home daycare, and morning naps are pretty much impossible given the volume of the six other children playing in the next room. Even at home, he has a hard time winding down when he can hear his older siblings making noise downstairs. When we got our Gro-hush, a portable white noise baby calmer, I was excited to give it a try, both at home and at the daycare. We use white noise in everyone’s bedroom at night time to facilitate good sleep, but after hearing reports that a baby’s hearing can be affecting by white noise that is too loud, I was nervous about using it in Evan’s room. The Gro-hush has three soothing white noise sounds to choose from, heart-beat, ocean waves or rain falling on a tin roof, which are all set at a safe volume.
Snuggled in my arms, with his other ear pressed against my chest, the Gro-hush’s comfy pillow-like shape is a natural fit. Evan loves the ocean waves sound the most, and within 30 seconds of turning it on, he’s fast asleep. Whether he’s in the baby carrier in a crowded place, at daycare during play time, or at home while his siblings wreak havoc, I no longer have to shush the other kids or forget naptime altogether. The Gro-hush even comes with a storage case to keep it clean and free of dust. I think this is an absolutely genius idea for any parent who thinks they have to choose between naps for their babies and activities for their big kids.
The second Gro sleep product I got to try out was the Gro Anywhere blackout blind. This portable blackout blind is adjustable to fit any size window, and is mounted with suction cups.
Blackout blinds are a must for Evan, since even the tiniest bit of light bothers him enough to keep him awake. Because I often end up putting him down for naps in whichever bedroom is the quietest at the time, we needed a portable solution to keep the daytime light out. When I came across the Gro Anywhere blind, I knew it was going to be a lifesaver (and well worth the $57.99 price tag, I might add). The blind is made of quality fabric, and uses Velcro tabs placed at intervals between the suction cups in order to customize its size (up to 198 x 130 cm).
The installation comes with a bit of a learning curve, and I’m not going to lie, suction cups and I do not get along. But after setting it all up and having a few of them pop off, I figured out how to press them hard enough for the blind to stay on. For this reason, I would strongly suggest not placing your baby to sleep near the window you are using it on, in the event that it falls off the window and onto the sleeping area. It’s well worth the effort to get this thing into place properly, because it will completely black out a room, even with the sun shining directly on it. Naps have become something I can look forward to again, and Evan is well rested and happy.
Sleep is a natural thing, but it doesn’t always come naturally to babies. Good sleep habits need to be taught, and like most modern parents, I’m happy there are gadgets like the Gro-hush and the Gro Anywhere blind to help make the process easier.
