As some of you may have already realized, I’m a huge advocate for babywearing. Not only does it allow me to soothe my little ones while getting other things done, it’s a crucial part of ferrying my large brood to and fro on a daily basis. While I love my Ergo and Toddler Tula, I was ready to expand my babywearing horizons. A buckle carrier is great for long treks, but it’s kind of a pain to carry around, and doesn’t really fit in my diaper bag. Back in August when Evan was born, I had a brief affair with woven wrapping, but it turns out that I lack the patience and skill to make it convenient. When I was approached by Natasha at NewB Babies, a New Brunswick WAHM who makes ring slings, booties and other wonderful goodies, I wasn’t too optimistic that I’d be able to rock a sling. But Natasha is also a huge proponent of babywearing, and with her fabulous support and tutorials, in addition to some Google videos, I’m happy to say that my NewBBabies ring sling is a permanent member of my babywearing stash.
There are a lot of things to love about these ring slings. First off, the material Natasha chooses is both beautiful and durable 100% cotton. This means it’s safe, and also can be dyed any colour you like if you’re a DIY-er like me. The sling folds up small enough to stuff into my already loaded diaper bag, so I can make sure I always have it with me for grocery runs or impromptu visits to the park. Because there aren’t a lot of buckles and straps to adjust, it can be used for multiple children of different ages and sizes without much fiddling. This is an especially important feature for me when I’m working at my sons’ daycare – I can wear the sling all day, and pop different toddlers and babies in and out of it as needed.
It accommodates several different positions that I hadn’t thought of – forward facing, as well as hip and back carries. The versatility of the ring sling is something that I didn’t anticipate, and I’m glad to have found it. While it won’t replace my buckle carriers in terms of comfort, it has certainly a lot more convenient for short trips, and is now a diaper bag essential!
