I am absolutely NOT an expert on the back-end business of blogging. I am, in most instances, totally clueless. That is why my goal of optimizing my ads for my US audience took me so long to accomplish: I was totally overwhelmed.
You see, my Canadian ad network, SheBlogs, is great! I’m happy with the opps and I am happy with the payout. However, being Canadian, they only show remnant ads to people viewing outside of our country (the advertisers are paying to specifically reach Canadians), and those pay (literally) in pennies.
I knew that if I could find a way to make my page show my SheBlogs ads to my Canadian viewers, and something else (an American ad network, Google Adsense, or in my case, Media.net) to my followers in the States, I could significantly increase my earnings.
An expert in the industry suggested I use Google Double Click for publishers. I signed up and then my head exploded. I didn’t have a clue where to begin. He suggested it would probably cost me about $50 to get someone to set it up for me.
No big deal, I’m not opposed to spending that much money on something that has the potential to earn me significantly more. However, I like to understand what goes on on my blog, I don’t want to have to rely on someone else. Also, I didn’t know whom to ask.
So I figured out how to do it myself!
How To Geo-Target Your Ads the Easy Way
(This applies to WordPress, I don’t know anything about other platforms.)
Buy a plugin called OIO Publisher (that’s my affiliate link). The plugin costs $47 USD and it is a one-time payment. You can use it on as many sites as you want. You can also save $10 by using my coupon code: NY15-FLUFFMAS
The main purpose of this plugin is actually to allow you to sell your ad space without a middle man. However, it also allows you, in a few clicks, to geo-target your ads!
Install OIO Publisher. I followed the instructions for the Automated Installed, and if I can do it, so can you!
Once it’s installed, you’ll be able to activate the plugin and then you’ll see OIO Ad Manager on your WordPress sidebar.
Step Three and a half:
Turn on geo location: Settings –> Geolocation –> Enable
Set up your ad zones. Your ad zones are the spots on your blog where you want to control which ads your readers see. I started with my header.
Click “Ad Zones” under OIO Ad Manager:
You will see this:
And then the important part, right at the bottom:
You are going to set up TWO default ads, ads that are shown when you haven’t sold any ad space, which, if you use ad networks, will be all the time.
Those two ads will then be set up so that one is shown only to Canada (in my case, SheBlogs) and the second (in my case, Media.net) is shown to everyone else.
And for Ad 2, I selected every country, then de-selected Canada.
Once you’ve got that all set up, it’s time to place those ads. You can copy & paste the code at the very top of the page and place it where it needs to go.
If you don’t want to copy & paste the code or it doesn’t work for you, you can also use their widget. Head over to Appearance –> Widgets within WordPress, and drag and drop:
At this point, you should be all set up. Ask a pal in the US to tell you what they see!
