Disclosure: I received this product and sexy lumberjack photo free for review. All opinions remain my own.
I haven’t been “fragrance free” for that long. In fact, it was not that long ago that I had J. Lo’s “Glo” perfume at the top of my Christmas wish list. I’d say that it’s only within the past three years that I have almost completely eliminated scented products from my home. Aside from essential oils that I add to my homemade shampoo and cleaning products, my house just doesn’t smell like… anything. And I like it that way!
I used to try different air fresheners to cover up the odour of my cat’s litter box. But you know what? It just made the house smell like perfumed poop. And I got annoyed with the waste: whether it’s an aerosol can, a cartridge for a plug-in freshener or one of those weird cone things, it adds up to a lot of trash.
Trash aside, most of these products receive a D-rating or lower from the Environmental Working Group for “a host of undisclosed, untested and potentially toxic substances, including phthalates, synthetic musks and allergens.”
That being said, a lot of people love to have different scents in their homes. Certain scents can bring about such a wide range of powerful, positive emotions for us, especially around the holidays. From candles to sprays, to gel cones, plug-ins or reed diffusers, I know that plenty of families love to purchase holiday-inspired fragrance products, and I want them to buy the safest version available.
When I received a message from ScentSicles promoting their “Eco-Friendly Scented Ornaments,” my curiosity was piqued and I wanted to find out what these products were all about.
What makes ScentSicles eco-friendly is that they are not plastic monstrosities. They are made of paper from sustainably-managed forests.
The scented “sprigs” are tightly rolled paper, infused with what ScentSicles calls “pure fragrance oil.” I admit that one of my disappointments upon receiving my box of ScentSicles products was a lack of an ingredient list.
ScentSicles told me the following about what makes their fragrance products safe:
ScentSicles are 100% paper-based fragrance sticks that are infused with pure fragrance oils. This means that we don’t mess around with the fragrance – and we keep it simple and clean since our products are made completely from paper. If you know fragrance, you know many are chemical-based. Because ScentSicles are paper-based, we are able to infuse more oil into every stick….that’s more fragrance for you to enjoy. It also means we don’t need the solvents and chemicals that some candles, plug-ins and reed diffusers require.
So how do they smell?
When I opened the package of sprigs, I was overwhelmed with nostalgia. I was in our living room back in my childhood home, the fire was crackling, our tree had just been brought in, and my Mom was pulling out the boxes of ornaments and we were carefully unwrapping each one while Boney M’s Christmas record played in the background. WOW. They smell just like a freshly cut tree.
The “sprigs” are meant to be tucked into Christmas display pieces such as wreathes. I placed some in a little cup and put it up on my bookshelf. With just two sprigs, I found our 800 sq-foot apartment smelt very much like Christmas.
Alas, I think ScentSicles are a bit too strong for me, and I decided not to leave them out after my day-long trial. As I find with a lot of scented products, even those that are safely scented like BioVert detergent, I just can’t handle the smell.
If you love scenting your home for Christmas and want a product that has a significantly lower environmental impact than traditional air fresheners, and without a lot of the harmful ingredients they contain, opt for ScentSicles.
If you’re sensitive to fragrance like me, you’re probably not in the market for this kind of product anyway. I did find that I got a head ache from having a couple sprigs out in our small apartment.
Whether or not a real or artificial tree is better for the environment is fully another debate, but if you miss the scent of a freshly-cut tree, you can use ScentSicles ornaments to spruce up your conifer.
