Perfectly Smooth Homemade Bum Balm Recipe

perfect-texture-homemade-bum-balm

Since I’ve been selected as one of David Suzuki’s Queen of Green “Green Coaches” for 2014, on Wednesdays I post my favourite ways to waste less…. #wasteLESSwednesday is my super hashtag.

Through some experimentation, I finally made a bum balm with a soft enough texture for easy application, even when it’s cold out!

Homemade Bum Balm Recipe

2 tbsp grated beeswax

1/3 cup coconut oil

about 1/8 cup each of almond oil and shea butter (I put a dollop of shea butter in a 1/4 cup measuring cup, then fill with almond oil)

20 drops lavender essential oil

20 drops tea tree essential oil

Put all ingredients except the essential oils in a Mason jar, and partially submerge the jar in boiling water. Stir occasionally to help melt and blend the ingredients.

Once the mixture is homogeneous, let it cool a bit before adding your essential oils. Then, pour into containers!

Making your own bum balm means reusing containers and buying ingredients in bulk, plus eliminating the shipping of the manufactured product to a retailer and then finally to you. It’s also less expensive… so, that’s what I’ve included it in #wasteLESSwednesday!

  3. […] for Cub, I make his bottom balm, and we really like Live Clean brand when we need something with a bit more oomph and some zinc […]

  4. I would love to try to make this! I’m sure the beeswax can be found on Amazon? They have everything 🙂 Thanks for the recipe!

Love it ! I’d probably cut the essential oils in half because of my babes sensitive skin but it’s certainly worth the try 🙂 The texture looks perfecT!

Agree on cutting the essential oils down, it should be no more than 3%, & this recipe is nearly 50%, which is even too much in adult recipes. You will be leaving these on your babies bum, anything put on the skin goes into the bloodstream and endocrine system. You don’t want to OD your baby on essential oil’s, and yes it does happen. You can even omit the lavender or make 2 so you can use the lavender at night time. You want your baby alert, especially if you are using the strength in the recipe for essential oil’s.

20 drops of essential oil weighs approximately 0.6 of a gram depending on the oil. So this recipe contains approximately 1.2 grams of essential oils. It is hard to work out how much the whole recipe is unless you weigh all the ingredients but they would weigh approximately 100g so the essential oils would be 1.2% not 50%
as you have said. You should not use essential oils on babies under 3 months at all so even 3 % is too much unless it’s just for older kids. Please when making products like this only use recipes that use weights not cup measures. It is very inaccurate. That includes weighing essential oils

Do you think it would work the same if I skipped the almond oil? We’re allergic to almonds here, but this looks like an amazing balm.

Yes Rose, you may use any carrier oil. It does not say it on the recipe but you will want to use solid coconut oil, not fractionated., which hardens and then melts as it is applied. The coconut oil will keep the consistency of the balm, along with the grated bee’s wax.. You can swap out any of the ingredients that you like but use the beeswax or the solid coconut oil so it hardens, if not it will be a liquid consistency. Lavender promotes sleep so I myself would not use it. Also, only use 3 drops each of the essential oil’s. This is not a large recipe so it will have a large percentage of essential oil and too strong for a young baby.

Awesome! I never thought about making my own! Might need to try this with the next baby 🙂

I’m not a fan of standing next to a stove with a pot of boiling water waiting FOREVER for beeswax to melt so I use one of those candle warmers (or coffee mug warmers) and let it sit until melted then add my other ingredients. Then I leave it sit on the warmer until everything is liquid again and stir. It’s easier that way

Thanks for the recipe. So glad I can get this at our local store it makes it easier to make things like these quickly rather than waiting for an online order.

  10. […] There are creams that are 100% cloth safe, meaning you don’t need to put any kind of liner in the diaper, you can just apply the cream and put on the diaper. You’ll notice these creams contain ingredients that are familiar (and often edible!): coconut oil, shea butter, Vitamin E, jojoba oil and essential oils. You can even make your own! […]

Do you have the weight of the ingredients? Thanks 🙂

Is this supposed to use solid coconut oil or liquid? Also is this sensitive skin friendly?
