Despite being an eternal review-reader and researcher before even the smallest purchases, I knew absolutely nothing about what I was getting when I ordered my custom diaper cover from Valhalla Centre, Alberta-based Leanne at Little Bottoms. All I knew was that she could do this:
So when I received my diaper cover, all I was expecting was that it would have a wolf on the butt and that it would be green (as I requested). Anything beyond that was to be a pleasant surprise.
Pleasant surprise the first:
Unlike all my other covers, I actually had to snap it down one level to get a good fit! How amazing to have a cover with such obvious room to grow, since I have a rather large little boy who has a while to go before potty learning.
Pleasant surprise part deux:
Unlike my other covers (except the Bummis Simply Lite, which hadn’t come out yet), the Little Bottoms cover actually covered our toddler-sized Bummis prefolds in a bikini twist fold. (GroVia and Flip covers do not)
Pleasant surprise trifecta:
With a wipeable inner, I could actually reuse the cover for multiple changes. (Pseudo-AI2s with a fleece pocket aren’t very reusable, in my opinion.
So this was all very good news, and I was happy, and those rare times I needed to use a prefold and could actually rangle Cub into one, I was always thrilled with my LB cover. But, as is human nature (and mom-of-toddler’s nature, in particular), I usually chose the path of least resistance and wrestled him into a TotsBots AIO or a BumGenius pocket, since those are one-piece options and somewhat easier to deal with. It seems that diaper changes are to Cub as water is to the Wicked Witch: cause for a meltdown.
So then I packed our diapers up for a 4-week trip to my parents’ place. Having recently fallen in love with Oko Creations hemp trifolds, I decided to use those and some covers as AI2s to reduce the amount of diapers to pack. I brought my 3 AppleCheeks covers, 4 Bummis Simply Lites, a GroVia shell and my Little Bottoms cover, along with 18 inserts (mostly hemp trifolds but also some Greenline bamboo inserts).
Guess which cover I reached for the most? My Little Bottoms of course!! As I mentioned, diaper changes mean meltdowns, and the fewer pieces, the better. Check it out:
With the trifold tucked into the flaps (which I never used before since I was just using it to cover a bikini twist), this cover is as AIO-ish as a cover can be without snaps (and I never bother snapping in snap-in inserts anyway). Kinda like a Flip cover, might you say? Indeed, I’ve tried Flip covers, and the LB cover is way better! Hold both in your hands: the LB cover just feels better and more durable. Plus, it’s larger and has an extra row of snaps for an even more adjustable rise. PLUS Leanne’s designs are hands down cuter, more unique and colourful…. And made in Canada!
So ya, would I recommend this cover? Absolutely. Would I redo my entire stash in Oko Hemp trifold and LittleBottoms covers? I can honestly say I would. It would be a smaller stash, super flexible, easy to maintain, and cheaper than the hoard I have amassed up until now…
UPDATE (Feb 3, 2014) I used my Little Bottoms cover overnight for the first time. NO LEAKS!! It’s my first WAHM-made cover that I can endorse overnight. Hurray!
UPDATE (Sep 3, 2014) We still get an awesome fit, and Cub has grown exponentially since first posting this review!
Not convinced you like using covers? She makes AI2s, pockets, fitteds, hybrid fitteds and even AIOs upon request! She also makes all her own appliqués and dyes her own fabric.
Leanne started LittleBottoms in 2012 and works out of her 7’x9′ sewing room surrounded by her massive fabric stash. (I can attest to the stash… when I said I wanted a green cover, she sent me a picture with more greens than I could name…)
Connect with Leanne via Facebook or Hyena Cart. She also stocks ready-to-ship items in the Make It Canadian Eh Congo. If you want to get your hands on a LittleBottoms diaper, Leanne uses Hyena Cart to open up custom slots, and she gives advance notice on Facebook. Regular covers start at $19 and appliqué covers at $24.
